Before you judge the prosperity gospel, do something most people never do. Go back and read the Gospels. Watch how Jesus ministered. Listen to what He preached. Look at how He and His disciples related to money. Then compare that to what you see on television, in large auditoriums, and on the platforms of preachers who have made financial blessing the centre of their message.
The gap between those two things is what is wrong with the prosperity gospel. And it is a gap wide enough to have swallowed millions of sincere believers whole.
What Is Wrong With the Prosperity Gospel? It Replaced the Gospel Itself
This is the first and most important thing to say. The prosperity gospel is not the gospel at all. It is a system dressed in gospel language that has replaced the actual good news with something else entirely.
The gospel, the real one, is the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ for the salvation of the world. That is what the word means. Good news. The good news is not that God will make you rich if you give enough. The good news is that the gap between God and humanity that opened in the garden when Adam sinned has been closed through the sacrifice of Jesus. That is the centre and whole point. Everything else flows from it.
When you move money and financial blessing to the centre of the message, you have not added to the gospel. You have replaced it. And a replaced gospel, no matter how confidently it is preached, is not the gospel at all. Paul wrote in Galatians 1:8: 'But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be accursed.' That is how seriously God takes the integrity of the message.
Compare the Ministry of Jesus With What You See Today
Ask a simple question. In the four Gospels, what did Jesus preach? He preached repentance. He preached the kingdom of God. He preached forgiveness of sins, healing of the broken, freedom for the captive, good news for the poor. Luke 4:18 records His own words about why He came: 'The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor.'
Not good news for the wealthy or financial strategy for the comfortable. Good news for the poor. The kind of news that changes a life from the inside, not from the bank account.
Now look at the book of Acts. How did the apostles minister? They preached the resurrection. They healed the sick. They cast out demons. They suffered for the message, were thrown in prison, beaten, and killed for it. Paul lists his credentials in 2 Corinthians 11:24-27: beaten five times, shipwrecked three times, in danger constantly, cold and hungry and naked. This is the man who carried the gospel across the known world. He was not living in abundance. He was living in faithfulness.
The prosperity gospel problems become clear the moment you hold it next to the actual ministry of Jesus and the apostles. There is no comparison. Because the comparison does not work.
The Tithe as a Ticket to Heaven
One of the clearest signs that something has gone deeply wrong with prosperity gospel teaching is the claim that if you do not pay your tithe, you will not enter heaven.
I sat in a service once where a well-known preacher stood at the pulpit and said exactly that, plainly, without softening it. I remember looking around the room and watching people who were visibly struggling financially nod along, as if their salvation genuinely depended on money they could not afford to give that month. I did not challenge it out loud that day. I have thought about that room many times since.
Think about what that claim actually says. It says that a financial payment determines your eternal destiny. It says the blood of Jesus Christ is not enough on its own. That His sacrifice at Calvary, the sacrifice that Hebrews 9:12 describes as obtaining eternal redemption for us, requires your ten percent to be complete.
John 14:6 says: 'I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me.'
Not through the tithe or through any offering. Through Jesus. That verse has no asterisk. It has no footnote that reads: 'unless you have missed your monthly giving, in which case please see your pastor.' Jesus is the way. Fully and completely.
The teaching that your tithe is a condition of salvation is not a strict reading of scripture. It is a distortion of it. And the people most harmed by that distortion are the ones too afraid to question it because they have been told that questioning is the same as rebellion against God.
Money Cannot Intercede for You
Some teachers in the prosperity gospel space have gone further still, teaching that when you sow a financial seed it speaks for you. That your money becomes a voice on your behalf before God.
The Bible is clear about who speaks on your behalf.
Romans 8:34 says: 'It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us.'
Hebrews 7:25 says: 'He is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.'
Jesus intercedes for you and me not the offering envelope nor your seed. Not even your monetary gift to a ministry. The blood of Jesus, Hebrews 12:24 says, speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Money has no voice in the courts of heaven. It never did. The teaching that it does is not a creative interpretation of scripture. It is a replacement of the gospel with a system where the seed rarely produces for the person planting it, whatever it may produce for the platform receiving it.
What the Prosperity Gospel Actually Produces
Set the theology aside for a moment and look simply at results. What does the prosperity gospel actually produce in the lives of ordinary believers who follow it consistently?
It produces passivity. When you believe that your financial breakthrough is tied to your seed offering and your level of confession, there is no practical reason to develop a skill, build a business, or learn how money works. You are waiting for the miracle that the seed will trigger. And while you wait, nothing gets built.
It produces financial dependency on leaders rather than on God and personal responsibility. The believer keeps coming back to the preacher, to the special offering, to the next conference, to the next prophetic word about their finances. The leader remains central. God, strangely, remains distant.
It produces shame when things do not work. When the promised breakthrough does not come, the believer is left to conclude that their faith was insufficient, their giving was inadequate, or some hidden sin is blocking their blessing. The system protects itself by making the failure always the fault of the believer and never the fault of the teaching.
Galatians 5:1 says: 'Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.'
A system that keeps believers returning in fear, giving beyond their means, and blaming themselves for results that were never promised by the actual Word of God is a yoke. And it is exactly what this verse warns against.
What God Actually Did for You and What He Expects in Return
Here is the truth that the prosperity gospel obscures by putting money at the centre. God has already blessed you. Not with a promise waiting to be unlocked by the right offering. With something He placed inside you before you were born.
Deuteronomy 8:18 says He gives you the ability to produce wealth. Ideas. Creativity. The capacity to think, to solve problems, to create something of value for other people. That is what He gave you. And what He expects from you is that you develop and use what He already placed inside you.
The kingdom of God does not run on seed offerings. It runs on people who discover what they were made to do and do it with diligence and excellence. Proverbs 22:29 says the skilled person stands before kings. Not the most generous giver. The skilled person. The one who developed what God put in them and brought it into the world as something useful.
You cannot put your heart on chasing money. That is the very thing 1 Timothy 6:10 warns against. What you do instead is pay attention to people and find out what they need. What problems they are carrying that you have the capacity to solve. Offer your gift, your knowledge, your skill, your service as the answer to that problem. Money follows value. It has always followed value. And value comes from what God put inside you, not from what you put into an offering bag.
The Gospel Is Still Good News
None of this is written to make you distrust the church or walk away from faith. The church is the body of Christ, and it matters. The problem has never been the church. The problem is what people brought into the church and called it the gospel when it was not.
The real gospel is still the best news anyone has ever heard. Jesus came. He lived perfectly. He died in the place of every person who had ever failed. He rose from the dead, proving that death itself does not have the final word. And He sent His Spirit to live inside every person who receives Him, to guide them, to empower them, and to lead them into a life that is genuinely, practically, abundantly full.
That life includes financial wisdom. It includes skill and diligence and planning and generosity. It includes learning how to manage what you have, build what you can, and give freely from a place of genuine abundance rather than fearful sacrifice.
That is the life God designed for you. Not the one being sold from a platform. The one available through the Word, through the Spirit, and through the willingness to develop what He already placed inside you.
